Due to the lack of studies in our country, we aimed to determine HPyV infection in cervical samples from women with and without lesions in Córdoba, as well as co-infection with HPV. A total of 143 DNA samples from cervical swabs (CS) were studied, with 65 samples corresponding to women with lesions (WL) of high and low grades, and 78 samples from women without lesions (WWL). The samples were analyzed by PCR for HPyV T antigen and revealed by agarose gel electrophoresis. 20% (13/65) of WL tested positive for HPyV, with a mean age of 31 years (range: 19-55 years). Among the HPyV-positive samples, 84% (11/13) had low-grade lesions, and 16% (2/13) had high-grade lesions. HPyV/HPV co-infection (genotypes 6, 11, 16, and 45) was found in 30.8% (4/13) of the HPyV-positive samples. Among the HPyV-positive women, 53.8% (7/13) used oral contraceptives (OCs), had no pregnancies or deliveries, and 15.4% (2/13) had experienced abortions. In the WWL group, 25.6% (20/78) tested positive for HPyV, with a mean age of 28.6 years (range: 18-38 years), and 5% (1/20) presented co-infection with HPV (genotype 18). Among these women, 60% (12/20) used OCs, and 70% (14/20) had no pregnancies, deliveries, or abortions. This is the first report of HPyV in cervical samples in Argentina. The high prevalence of HPyV in the cervix indicates the need for further studies to determine the clinical implications of this finding. This is especially important for the group of women with lesions, where a high percentage of co-infection with both viruses was found. This study provides a foundation for future research that could improve prevention and management strategies for cervical viral infections, contributing to the health of the female population in Córdoba.

Los poliomavirus (HPyV) y papilomavirus humanos (VPH) contienen a virus oncogénicos. Estudios demostraron un vínculo entre el desarrollo de neoplasia cervical y VPH, sin embargo, sólo una fracción de las mujeres VPH positivas desarrollan cáncer. Se ha propuesto que una interacción entre VPH/HPyV podría aumentar el riesgo de neoplasia cervical. Debido a la falta de estudios en nuestro país, nos propusimos determinar la infección por HPyV en muestras cervicales de mujeres con y sin lesiones de Córdoba, así como la co-infección con VPH. Se estudiaron 143 muestras de ADN de hisopados cervicales (HC), 65 muestras corresponden a mujeres con lesiones (MCL) alto grado y bajo grado, y 78 muestras de mujeres sin lesiones (MSL). Las muestras fueron analizadas por PCR para antígeno T de HPyV y reveladas por electroforesis en gel de agarosa. El 20% (13/65) de MCL resultaron positivas para HPyV, media de edad de 31 años (19-55 años). El 84% (11/13) de las muestras HPyV positivas, tenían lesión de bajo grado y el 16% (2/13) de alto grado. El 30,8% (4/13) de las muestras positivas para HPyV presentó co-infección con VPH (genotipos 6, 11, 16 y 45). El 53,8% (7/13) de las mujeres positivas para HPyV utilizaban anticonceptivos orales (ACO), no tuvieron gestas ni partos y el 15,4% (2/13) tuvieron abortos. El 25,6% (20/78) de MSL resultaron positivas para HPyV, media de edad de 28,6 años (18-38 años) y el 5% (1/20) presentó co-infección con VPH (genotipo 18). El 60% (12/20) de MSL utilizaban ACO, el 70 % (14/20) no tuvieron gestas, paras o abortos. Este es el primer reporte de HPyV en muestras de cérvix en Argentina. La elevada prevalencia de HPyV en cérvix, indica la necesidad de continuar los estudios para determinar la implicancia clínica de este hallazgo. Esto último, es importante principalmente para el grupo de mujeres con lesiones en el que se encontró un alto porcentaje de co-infección con ambos virus. Este estudio proporciona una base para futuras investigaciones que podrían mejorar las estrategias de prevención y manejo de las infecciones virales cervicales, contribuyendo a la salud de la población femenina en Córdoba.   .
