description HCoV-OC43 causes frequent acute upper and lower respiratory tract infections, causing global morbidity and mortality in children under 4 years of age. We determined the circulation, clinical picture and seasonality of HCoV-OC43 in monoinfection and coinfection along with other respiroviruses already detected by the Municipal Children's Hospital (HIM-Córdoba) in hospitalized patients aged 1m-14years with lower ARI, during 2018-2019. This is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, annual study in 1,053 samples, focusing on HCoV-OC43. HIM detected by direct immunofluorescence (DIF) respiratory panel as epidemiological context to determine HCoV-OC43 by RT-PCR. The prevalence of respiratory infections of confirmed etiology was described by percentages expressed in tables, bar, line and pie charts applying Microsoft Excel-2013 functions. The seasonal distribution of HCoV-OC43 was organized by month in relation to other respiroviruses and to climatic variable data obtainedfrom OMIXOM software. The overall prevalence of all respiroviruses was 77.86% (820/1053), with a prevalence of 5.41% (57/1053) for HCoV-OC43, including monoinfections (27/57) and coinfections (30/57) with hRSV and hMPV with prevalences of 22% (13/57) and 3.5% (2/57) respectively. Treatment was symptomatic, avoiding the use of antibiotics in monoinfections and viral coinfections, which was very well received and applied by pediatricians. It predominated in patients up to 2 years of age, male, generating Bronchial Obstructive Syndrome, Bronchiolitis, Asthma, Pneumonia and other ARI. The seasonality of HCoV-OC43 presented the characteristic behavior of respiroviruses, although there were numerous cases of summer monoinfection, whose significant prevalence was: 31.6% (18/57) being novel, behavior similar to that of tropical countries. This research, a valuable contribution to the health of the pediatric community, broadened the knowledge of HCoV-OC43, very little studied in Córdoba. It demonstrated the circulation, clinical and seasonality of HCoV-OC43 in monoinfection and coinfection with other respiroviruses in infants. Molecular detection of HCoV-OC43 added to routine differential diagnosis by IFD is a remarkable and effective expanded strategy in initial screening. Endemic epidemiologic surveillance was activated to alert for epidemic emergencies. Appropriate treatment was optimized, providing public health strategies and preventive measures, improving health conditions in the country.

Se determinó circulación, cuadro clínico y estacionalidad de HCoV-OC43 en monoinfección y coinfección junto a otros respirovirus ya detectados por el Hospital Infantil Municipal (HIM-Córdoba) en internados desde 1m-14años con IRAs bajas, durante 2018-2019. Fue un estudio observacional, descriptivo, transversal, anual en 1.053 muestras, enfocado en HCoV-OC43. El HIM detectó por Inmunofluorescencia directa (IFD) el Panel respiratorio como contexto epidemiológico para determinar HCoV-OC43 por RT-PCR. Se describió la prevalencia de infecciones respiratorias de etiología confirmada mediante porcentajes expresados en tablas, gráficos de barra, de líneas y tortas aplicando funciones de Microsoft Excel-2013. La distribución estacional de HCoV-OC43 se organizó por meses relacionándolos con otros respirovirus y datos de las variables climáticas obtenidos del software OMIXOM. La prevalencia global de todos los respirovirus fue 77,86 % (820/1053), con una prevalencia 5,41 % (57/1053) para HCoV-OC43, incluyendo monoinfecciones (27/57) y coinfecciones (30/57) con hRSV y hMPV cuyas prevalencias de 22% (13/57)  y con 3,5% (2/57) respectivamente. El tratamiento fue sintomático evitando el uso de antibióticos en monoinfecciones y coinfecciones virales, aportes muy bien recibidos y aplicados por los pediatras. Predominó en pacientes de hasta 2 años de edad, masculinos, generando Síndrome Obstructivo Bronquial, Bronquiolitis, Asma, Neumonía y otras IRAs. La estacionalidad HCoV-OC43 presentó el comportamiento característico de respirovirus, aunque hubo numerosos casos estivales en monoinfección, cuya prevalencia significativa: 31,6% (18/57) fue novedad, comportamiento similar al de los países tropicales. Esta investigación, un aporte valioso para la salud de la comunidad pediátrica, amplió el conocimiento de HCoV-OC43, muy poco estudiado en Córdoba. Demostró la circulación, clínica y estacionalidad de HCoV-OC43 en monoinfección y coinfección junto a otros respirovirus en infantes. La detección molecular de HCoV-OC43 agregada al diagnóstico diferencial de rutina por IFD es una estrategia ampliada, notable y eficaz en el tamizaje inicial. Activó la vigilancia epidemiológica endémica para alertar emergencias de epidemias. Optimizó el tratamiento adecuado, brindando estrategias para la salud pública junto a medidas de prevención, mejorando las condiciones sanitarias del país. Universidad Nacional Córdoba.
