Type 2 diabetes also has a high prevalence in this age group and the susceptibility, severity, and mortality from COVID-19 among diabetic patients is increased. This background led us to investigate the impact of COVID-19 on a local population of OA with diabetes. Objective: To determine mortality rates during pre-pandemic periods (years 2018-2019) and COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) in the studied population of OA and calculate excess mortality. To determine if diabetic patients had an increased mortality risk in this population.
Retrospective study of medical records of 658 elderly patients, average age 76 years, treated at the "San Ricardo Pampuri" Health Center in Villa Carlos Paz (Córdoba, Argentina), between 2018 and 2022. The results were statistically analyzed. data using Infostat (α=0.05). The main epidemiological measures were calculated, the Odd Ratio was determined for diabetic patients and values were compared between periods.
Mortality rates during the periods evaluated were 2018-2019: 6.23% and 2020-2021: 8.75%. Among diabetic patients, mortality was: 2018-2019: 9.46% vs 2020-2021: 13.81%. COVID-19-specific mortalities were 2018-2019: 0%, in 2020-2021: 3.08% overall and 5.22% among diabetic patients. During the pandemic, mortality increased by 40% in this OA population. Diabetic patients had a higher risk (OR: 2.6) of dying from COVID-19. The partial data for 2022 indicate that mortality decreased compared to the same period in 2021 (11 vs 19 total deaths and 2 vs 7 due to COVID-19, respectively).
During the COVID-19 pandemic, an increase in mortality was observed in the OA population studied, with a greater impact on patients with diabetes. The downward trend in these indicators in 2022 can probably be explained by the vaccination of this population against SARS-COV-2. |

El síndrome respiratorio agudo severo por coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19), afectó mundialmente a 550 millones de personas y causó más de 6 millones de muertes. Los adultos mayores (AM) fueron el segmento de población más afectado en términos de hospitalización, malos resultados y mortalidad por COVID-19. Esto resulta de la alta prevalencia de comorbilidades en los AM. La diabetes tipo 2 también tiene una alta prevalencia en este grupo etario y la susceptibilidad, gravedad y mortalidad por COVID-19 entre los pacientes diabéticos está aumentada. Estos antecedentes nos llevaron a investigar el impacto del COVID-19 en una población local de AM con diabetes. Objetivo: Determinar las tasas de mortalidad durante períodos pre-pandemia (años 2018-2019) y pandemia COVID-19 (2020-2021) en la población de AM estudiada y calcular la sobremortalidad. Determinar si los pacientes diabéticos tuvieron un riesgo de mortalidad aumentado en esta población. Estudio retrospectivo de historias clínicas de 658 pacientes adultos mayores, edad promedio 76 años, atendidos en el Centro de Salud “San Ricardo Pampuri” de Villa Carlos Paz (Córdoba, Argentina), entre los años 2018 a 2022. Se analizaron estadísticamente los datos utilizando Infostat (α=0.05). Se calcularon las principales medidas epidemiológicas, se determinó el Odd Ratio para los pacientes diabéticos y compararon valores entre períodos. Las tasas de mortalidad durante los períodos evaluados fueron 2018-2019: 6,23% y 2020-2021: 8,75%. Entre los pacientes diabéticos la mortalidad fue: 2018-2019: 9,46% vs 2020-2021: 13,81%. Las mortalidades específicas por COVID-19 fueron 2018-2019: 0%, en 2020-2021: 3,08% general y 5,22% entre pacientes diabéticos. Durante la pandemia la mortalidad se incrementó un 40% en esta población de AM. Los pacientes diabéticos tuvieron más riesgo (OR:2,6) de morir por COVID-19. Los datos parciales de 2022, indican que la mortalidad disminuyó respecto al mismo período del 2021 (11 vs 19 muertes totales y 2 vs 7 por COVID-19, respectivamente). Durante la pandemia por COVID-19 se observó un incremento de la mortalidad en la población de AM estudiada, con mayor impacto en pacientes con diabetes. La tendencia a la disminución de estos indicadores en 2022, probablemente pueda ser explicada por la vacunación de esta población contra el SARS-COV-2. Universidad Nacional Córdoba.
