A thorough analysis was done over the results the resolutions obtained during group work done by students of Physics I at Engineering Faculty from Unicen while solving a problem that involved the scaling of the tower-crane which could have been used in a definite and real work (raising the replica of the moving stone of Tandil city). The analysis consisted on the identification of the strategies implemented in the different stages which are, according to the reference theoretical framework, involved in the resolution of problems. The data obtained allowed to envisage different levels of development of the solving problems competence, being able to categorize the majority in an “intermediate” level characterized by the lack of strategies related to the analysis and criteria’s selection of data and the absence of self-assessment of both the implemented procedures and the results obtained. The findings indicate which aspects should teaching strengthen to optimize the development of the intended competencies. Este trabajo es parte de una investigación más amplia cuyo propósito es identificar categorías que representen los modelos de procedimientos de resolución de problemas del tipo ingenieriles e indefinidos, que implementan estudiantes de carreras de ingeniería, en el contexto de clases de Física. Se analizaron minuciosamente las resoluciones que realizaron, trabajando grupalmente, estudiantes de Física I de la Facultad de Ingeniería de la UNCPBA, al resolver un problema que implica dimensionar la grúa- torre que podría haberse usado para realizar un trabajo real y concreto (izar la réplica de la piedra movediza de la ciudad de Tandil). Dicho análisis consistió en identificar las estrategias implementadas en las distintas etapas que, según el marco teórico de referencia, involucra la resolución de un problema. Los datos obtenidos permitieron vislumbrar distintos niveles de desarrollo de la competencia de resolución de problemas, pudiéndose categorizar a la mayoría en un estado “intermedio”, caracterizado por la falta de estrategias inherentes al análisis y selección criteriosa de datos y la ausencia de la autoevaluación de procedimientos implementados y resultados obtenidos. Lo hallado da indicios de qué aspectos debería fortalecer la enseñanza a fin de optimizar el desarrollo de competencias deseado.
