Energy and its conservation law is an articulating concept in physics, and it is present in the teaching of all of its areas, but while in some of them, such as mechanics or thermodynamics, it is presented in an integrated way, in electromagnetism it is presented in a fragmented and incomplete manner. In this paper we propose a didactic sequence for basic university level, which resurfaces the Poynting theorem as an expression of energy’s conservation law in electromagnetism, to account for the energy processes that involve electric circuits as well as interactions between electric and magnetic fields. This sequence has been implemented for several years in a basic electromagnetism course in engineering and answers many authors’ claims that point out the absence of a discussion about the interactions between electromagnetic fields in electric circuits and the energy transfer processes between source and devices. La energía y su principio de conservación es un concepto articulador en la física, y está presente en la enseñanza de todas sus áreas, pero mientras en algunas, como en mecánica o termodinámica, se presenta de modo integrado, en electromagnetismo su presentación es fragmentada e incompleta. En este trabajo proponemos una secuencia didáctica para el nivel universitario básico, que rescata el teorema de Poynting como expresión del principio de conservación de la energía en electromagnetismo para dar cuenta de los procesos energéticos que involucran tanto circuitos eléctricos como interacciones entre campos eléctricos y magnéticos. Esta secuencia viene siendo implementada desde hace varios años en un curso básico de electromagnetismo para carreras de ingeniería y responde al reclamo de numerosos autores que señalan la ausencia de la discusión de la interacción entre los campos electromagnéticos en circuitos eléctricos y de los procesos de transferencia de energía entre fuente y dispositivos.
