The paper describes a research action teaching exercise that included renewable energies uses as an environ-mental issues in physics teaching. Another goal was to overcome traditional teaching placing the students in a active role. A sequence of activities was proposed to design, construct and improve solar water heaters in se-condary schools of Payogasta, Campo Quijano and La Silleta (Province of Salta). Solar heater is a "generative topic" in the sense proposed by M. Stone Wiske in her teaching for understanding theory. It must be authentic, accessible, very interesting for students and fascinating for teachers. The action research exercise generated a positive environment for teaching and learning and planned new proposals that are being explored. En este trabajo se describe un proceso de investigación acción que aborda la problemática ambiental y energética en la enseñanza de la física, buscando al mismo tiempo opciones superadoras a la enseñanza tradicional, intentando ubicar a los estudiantes en un rol activo. Se propuso para este abordaje una secuencia de actividades en torno al diseño, construcción y mejora de calefones solares que se llevó a cabo en colegios secundarios de Payogasta, Campo Quijano y La Silleta (Provincia de Salta). El calefón solar puede considerarse un “tópico generativo” en el sentido propuesto por M. Stone Wiske dentro del marco de la enseñanza para la comprensión, presentándose auténtico, accesible e interesante para los alumnos y fascinante para los docentes. La implementación de las actividades propició un ambiente enriquecedor para el aprendizaje comprensivo, inspirando nuevas propuestas que se encuentran actualmente en desarrollo.
