To this end, in a first section, those readings with long-term historical pretence are presented; then those that appeared since the 1990s and emphasized some changes that social policy would have undergone under neoliberalism. Finally, it is noted in the debate, revitalized in the last decade, which places the discussion of the social assistance in the field of social rights and aims to be fought by a National Social Assistance Act. Este texto muestra cuál ha sido la contribución del debate académico en la conformación de la Asistencia Social, presentando distintas perspectivas históricas sobre el desarrollo del campo. Para ello, en un primer apartado, se presentan aquellas lecturas con pretensión histórica de largo plazo; luego, aquellas que aparecieron desde la década de 1990 y que hicieron énfasis en algunos cambios que habría sufrido la política social bajo el neoliberalismo. Finalmente, se puntualiza en el debate, revitalizado en la última década, que coloca la discusión de la Asistencia Social en el terreno de los derechos sociales y apunta a bregar por una Ley Nacional de Asistencia Social.
