At an exploratory level, "botanical illiteracy" was found, whose epistemic root identifies assumptions from zoology or human biology, which constitute an obstacle to understanding reproductive biology from a complex perspective. El siguiente trabajo basa su análisis y descripción en las evidencias obtenidas de un estudio en el que se recogieron las concepciones relativas a los ciclos biológicos de los vegetales, de estudiantes que cursaban la carrera de profesorado en Ciencias Biológicas de Uruguay. Se diseñó y aplicó un instrumento para la colecta de datos a fin de analizar la incidencia de las preconcepciones en la comprensión de los ciclos reproductivos y reconocer aquellas correlaciones causales. A nivel exploratorio, encontramos un “analfabetismo botánico”, cuya raíz epistémica identifica supuestos que provienen de la zoología o la biología humana, Estos constituyen un obstáculo para comprender la biología reproductiva desde una perspectiva compleja.
