From an approach with theoretical and methodological tools from the History of Reading and the Didactics of the teaching of reading and writing, we seek to highlight the problems faced by this teacher to teach reading and the appropriation operations of written culture deployed by his students. In doing so, we propose to think about books and readers in a peripheral space of the educational and literate field of Argentina in the mid-twentieth century. In order to explore these issues, we have divided the paper into three sections. First, we describe the history of the village and its school. Then we introduce Ripa and his chronicle. Finally, we analyze the reading scenes that took place in the school. En este artículo analizamos las escenas de lectura escolar presentes en la memoria del maestro rural Julián Isidoro Ripa, quien se desempeñó entre 1936 y 1943 en la Escuela Nacional N.º 15 de Colonia Cushamen, Chubut, Argentina. A partir de un abordaje con herramientas teóricas y metodológicas provenientes de la Historia de la lectura y la  Didáctica de la enseñanza de la lectura y la escritura, buscamos poner de manifiesto las problemáticas a las que se enfrentó este docente para enseñar a leer y las operaciones de apropiación de la cultura escrita desplegadas por sus alumnos y alumnas. Con ello, nos proponemos pensar libros y lectores en un espacio periférico del campo educativo y letrado de la Argentina de mediados del siglo XX. Para adentrarnos en estas cuestiones, hemos dividido el trabajo en tres apartados. Primero describimos la historia del paraje y de su escuela. Luego presentamos a Ripa y su crónica.
