Pacheco – Cultura urbana – Buenos Aires During the early decades of the 20th century, the genre sainete criollo (a one-act comedy play) constituted a key role for the city’s entertainment industry by representing everyday-life aspects of popular sectors, through a satirical and melodramatic style. The approach of this article is to analyse a set of sainetes by Carlos M. Pacheco – a notable playwright of the period- to highlight different representations about urban life and specific suburban areas from the city of Buenos Aires. In this sense, scenic directions, storylines, and dialogues that depict the reality of suburban lifestyles as well as the interaction between man and his surroundings and the constant pressure between deciding whether to stay or leave these areas, will be addressed. El sainete criollo constituyó un pilar clave en el mundo del entretenimiento porteño durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. En este género, se mostraron representaciones sobre la vida cotidiana de los sectores populares con un carácter paródico y melodramático. Aquí se analiza un conjunto de sainetes de Carlos M. Pacheco, sainetista destacado del periodo, para distinguir las representaciones sobre la vida urbana y barrios específicos de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. En tal sentido, se abordan las indicaciones escénicas, tramas argumentales y parlamentos que dan cuenta de la representación material de los suburbios, la vinculación sujeto-ambiente y las tensiones entre permanencia y partida de los barrios.
