According to them, the Territory had all the elements needed to be raised to the condition of an autonomous political unity and thus included among the fourteen existing provinces. These circumstances led some actors to pronounce themselves against the possible raising of the Pampean Territory into a provincial condition. Ángel Ávalos, a publicist born in Corrientes and settled in Córdoba, was one of them. In different publications, Ávalos openly opposed the Pampean provincialists. The aim of this paper is, firstly, to analyze the arguments used by Ávalos to reject the transformation of the Territory into a new province and secondly, to explore the impact of his interventions on the unfolding of events, which was disappointing for the provincialists. Thus, the purpose is to give an account of the interactions between academic and political circles, as well as to evaluate how the diagnoses on the state of the Argentine federalism weighted on the challenge represented by the admission of new provinces. Hacia 1914, encabezado por figuras políticas de relieve, un grupo de vecinos del Territorio Nacional de La Pampa emprendió una campaña para lograr su reconocimiento como una nueva provincia argentina. Según estos, el Territorio reunía todos los requisitos necesarios para ser elevado a la condición de una entidad política autónoma e incorporado así al conjunto de las catorce provincias entonces existentes. Estas circunstancias llevaron a algunos actores a pronunciarse en contra de esa posible elevación del Territorio pampeano a la condición de provincia. Uno de ellos fue Ángel Ávalos, un publicista oriundo de Corrientes y radicado en Córdoba, quien a través de diversas publicaciones intervino en abierta oposición a los provincialistas pampeanos. En este artículo, se analizan los argumentos empleados por Ávalos para rechazar la transformación de aquella gobernación en una nueva provincia, como asimismo se intenta explorar la incidencia de sus intervenciones en el desenlace de los acontecimientos, contrario a las aspiraciones provincialistas. De esta manera se busca dar cuenta de las interacciones entre los círculos académicos y políticos, como también evaluar el modo en que los diagnósticos acerca del estado del federalismo argentino pesaron sobre el inédito desafío que representaba la admisión de nuevas provincias.
