En base al análisis de las líneas 78-102 del sermón XLVIII de Máximo de Turín, este trabajo tiene un doble objetivo: por un lado, examinar la pertinencia de la acríticamente aceptada sinonimia que, de acuerdo a los investigadores, habría existido en la prédica del obispo entre los términos paganismus y gentilitas; por otro, determinar la especificidad semántica que a cada uno de ellos correspondió a partir de la consideración de las características que el autor atribuyó respectivamente a pagani y gentiles en dicha homilía.
