Our main source is the Fondo Documental Juan Moreteau, which includes the material gathered by this mining engineer who was part of the subcommittees that demarcated the Patagonian limit. Our hypothesis is that the construction of the border was far from linear, involving multiple agents and networks. Furthermore, we consider that the Commission and its subcommittees operated as an extension of the State in the region. We address the experiences and conditions of the work, within the framework of the commissioners’ discussions and interpretations of the limit. In this way, we propose to historicize the construction of the “natural” border. En 1881 Argentina y Chile firmaron un tratado para resolver la controversia de su frontera en común, estableciendo la Cordillera de los Andes como línea divisoria. La demarcación fue llevada a cabo por comisiones creadas en cada país. Nos proponemos ahondar en la Historia Social de la Comisión Argentina de Límites con Chile en Patagonia. Nuestra fuente principal es el Fondo Documental Juan Moreteau, que incluye el material reunido por este ingeniero en minas que formó parte de las subcomisiones que demarcaron el límite patagónico. Partimos de la hipótesis de que la construcción de la frontera distó de ser lineal, involucrando múltiples agentes y redes. Asimismo, consideramos que la Comisión y sus subcomisiones operaron como una extensión del Estado en la región. Abordamos las experiencias y condiciones de la labor, en el marco de las discusiones e interpretaciones de los comisionados sobre el límite.
