The battle for Buenos Aires was the end of a long confrontation between national and provincial governments, between civilians and the military, between political parties, between opposing figures, between different sectors of economic power. But it was also, without doubt, a fight for a place, for a city, that would bring together the material conditions necessary to house the federal government of an evolving modern nation. Through the example of Buenos Aires, I propose to revisit debates over the definition of the capital city from the viewpoint of theoretical political schemes that cross into the field of material representation, seen within the processes of nation-state formation in the mid-nineteenth century. Con la sanción del decreto de federalización de Buenos Aires, el 6 de diciembre de 1880 la llamada cuestión capital de la República Argentina, quedaría resuelta. Dejando un saldo de 2.500 víctimas entre muertos y heridos, más de 20.000 hombres protagonizaron el capítulo más violento en el proceso por la definición del sitio para la “residencia de las autoridades”, luego de setenta años de disputas. La batalla por Buenos Aires fue el fin de una larga contienda entre el gobierno nacional y provincial; entre civiles y militares; entre partidos políticos; entre figuras antagónicas; entre distintos sectores de poder económico; pero también fue, sin duda, una lucha por un lugar, por una ciudad, que reuniera además, las condiciones materiales para ser la sede de un gobierno federal de una nación moderna. A través del caso de Buenos Aires, se propone revisitar el debate por la definición de una ciudad capital desde el punto de vista de aquellas representaciones que, provenientes de esquemas políticos teóricos, pasan al campo de las representaciones materiales, en el contexto de la conformación de los estados-nación modernos durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX Centro de Estudios Históricos “Prof. Carlos S.
