El presente artículo busca describir de qué forma la disciplina histórica, tanto en Santiago de Chile en particular como de América Latina en general, cubriendo desde los procesos de independencia a principios del siglo XIX hasta nuestros días. Partiendo desde las biografías de ciudades va describiendo la complejización del campo de la historia urbana hasta desembocar en su variante cultural, la que es mayormente reconocida y practicada hoy en día.
