The small Mammals record in PA70 Arroyo Tulumaya archaeological site (northeast Mendoza). Taphonomic issues and environmental implications for the last 500 years

In this work, results of the analyses of archaeological (PA70) and current (Laguna de Soria) small mammal assemblages from Northeastern Mendoza plains are presented. The taphonomic analysis suggests that small mammal remains recovered from the archaeological site were accumulated b...

description In this work, results of the analyses of archaeological (PA70) and current (Laguna de Soria) small mammal assemblages from Northeastern Mendoza plains are presented. The taphonomic analysis suggests that small mammal remains recovered from the archaeological site were accumulated by nocturnal raptors (owls), which produced slight modifcations on preyed bone sets. By comparing past and present assemblages, a decrease of diversity and specifc richness were observed in the current sets comparing to archaeological ones. The results suggest conditions of greater environmental heterogeneity during LatePrehispanic-Early Colonial periods. The current assemblages are composed of generalistic and opportunistic species, related to highly impacted areas by intensive agricultural and  / or urban activities developed in the region since the arrival of European conquerors to the region.
