description This article presents new information regarding the iconography represented in a set of pottery pieces assigned to Late Formative period (2000 to1300 BP) of the Antofagasta de la Sierra microrregion. The sample studied comes from Casa Chávez Montículos site, a village of herders and farmers with dates between ca. 2400 to 1300 BP. The main objective of this paper focuses on characterizing the iconography in order to advance the knowledge of pottery development of Antofagasta. With this objective in mind, the iconographic analysis encompassed more than a simple count of the different types of motifs executed on the vessels, since emphasis placed on different technical and gestural elements and on how these were combined to give rise to the identified images. As result of the analysis we observe a wide thematic repertoire of motifs, both figurative and non-figurative, and four different visual resources, defined in technical and gestural terms. These results showed variability according to the different sectors of origin within the site. We link this variability with the processes of intensification of relationships that were developed from ca. 2000 years BP among the societies of Antofagasta and those that occupied the mesothermal valleys.
