description By means of the Virreinal Census of Carlos III of 1778, the four curatos of the Puna de Jujuy, Santa Catalina, Rinconada, Cochinoca and Yavi were demographically characterized. The registered surnames were used and applying the isonymic method, it was estimated consanguinity, diversity, recent immigration, isolation and sedentarism. The results show the presence of large families, important percentages of children and long-lived people indicative of good living conditions. The isonymic analysis indicates that Yavi is the least consanguineous curato and with the greatest population mobility because it is the seat of the Marquesado de Tojo and because of its location on the border with Bolivia. Cochinoca is a closed population, with high consanguinity and sedentarism, scarce recent immigration and diversity of surnames. This isolation is not due to geographical barriers but to its situation as an entrusted population. The migratory behavior registered presents intersex differences, the feminine one is related to the virilocal residence typical of the Andean kinship system, while the masculine one can be associated to labor migrations. The source and methodology used turned out to be adequate since the results obtained coincide with historical processes experienced by the colonial settlers of the Puna of Jujuy at the end of the 18th century.
