description This paper problematises the category of stela that egyptologists have used to identify and analyse a varied set of objects. A review of the conceptualisation of the stelae for the site of Abydos, one of the main Egyptian religious centres dedicated to the cult of the god Osiris, allows us to observe that there is a disparity of explicit and implicit allusions in the historical-archaeological works that turns the concept of stela into a diffuse category. It is proposed, considering the proposals to study objects from the perspectives on material culture and materiality, to rethink the concept and give rise to new questions for future studies.
