description In southern Calchaquí Valley, ceramic production has had an intense dynamic in the past. Its continuity until present day has led to consider it as a significant variable in the context of the historical social process of the last millennium. In this paper, changes in the form and function of ceramic artifacts are analyzed in the light of historical and modern data. Interviews were made in order to figure out the model of productive strategy of modern ceramists in Cafayate. Mainly, it is considered that pottery activity involves a complex technological knowledge developed by artisans in the past and present. The key to its persistence is anchored to not only the availability, control and access to the resources of the lower Calchaquí basin, but also to the “know-how” or “knowledge” linked to permanent economic and social needs of the local context. Finally, inferences regarding the pursuit of technical gestures that can explain certain patterns of regularity present in the manufacturing ceramics process are proposed in this article.
