description An experimental study aimed to examine the types of fracture characteristics of certain vessels types morphologically recurrent in Northwestern Patagonia Argentina and South Central Chile is presented. The objective of this study is to test whether the fragments that have been characterized as “chips” (Aldazabal and Eugenio 2004, 2009) in the lower basin of the Limay River may arise as a result of physical and mechanical fractures. For this, typical vessels with known local clays, and cooking techniques established for Patagonia were replicated. These pots were subjected to stress process, and the samples obtained were analyzed. Initial data suggest that these “chips” may have originated as a result of unintentional process. To reinforce this discussion, it is necessary to incorporate other considerations as smoothing and/or polishing outlines, as well as expand these experimental studies on fractures on a wider variety of shape and numbers of pots.
