The aim of this paper is to present the rock art from El Alto-Ancasti mountain range (Catamarca) focusing in a number of sites with engravings. This focus exposes the diversity of the rock art manifestations in the region that up to this moment has been seen from the perspective of the art present in caves and rock shelters. Thus, the analyses involved sites with engravings in Puesto La Mesada, Rastro del Avestruz, Los Morteros, Salamanca de Albigasta, Oyola and El Taco. The survey included in situ data collection regarding copies of the motifs, locational characteristics such as visibility and visuality of the engraved rocks, the amount of people that could gather around them, the distance from other archaeological sites and relations with other components of the archaeological landscapes, the likelihood of such rocks to be seen, etc. As a result from this survey we conclude that as counterpart of the painted rock art in caves, the sites analyzed are part of the residential and productive spaces. This rock art modality is imbricated and constitutive of the everyday landscapes, almost opposed to the restricted spaces within the painted caves. |
