The prognosis of oral cancer depends on early diagnosis. The 95% are squamous cell carcinoma (SCC); the principal risk factors are: environmental, chemical, physical and biological agents. In a previous study of our service (1995 to 2005), there was a general survival of 35 to 40%.The aim of this work is to study the survival of oral SCC in the period 2006 - 2016, and to relate it to the stage at diagnosis, localization, risk factors and compare with the results of the earlier study. Materials and Methods: An observational and retrospective study of medical records of patients with oral SCC who attended in the period 2006-16. There were sex, age, location, use of tobacco, alcohol, and mate; date of diagnosis and the last follow-up visit or death. The Kaplan-Meier test. The level of statistical significance testing will be of a p-value <0.05. We used the 2011 computer software infostat. Results: Of the 178 cases selected the 62% were males, the average age of 63 years, the most frequent localization language (39%), followed by gum (16%). The 48% smoked, 45% consumed alcoholic beverages and a 75% took Mate. The general survival to 5 years was 50%, patients diagnosed in early stages had a survival rate of 69%, while those diagnosed in late stage only 41%. To analyze the survival according to the location, the worst prognosis were in order of frequency of the base of the tongue and oropharynx, floor of the mouth and gums. Conclusions The increase in overall survival, and in particular in patients diagnosed in early stages would be related to the greater access to data for recent years and better therapeutic possibilities. .It is essential to continue with campaigns to promote the dissemination and the concurrency early to improve survival.
