In the ichthyogeographic sense, it is one of the regions with the greatest abundance and diversity of freshwater species in the world. Numerous populations along the Paraná River make ichthyofauna their main subsistence resource. The general knowledge of the life and feeding habits of fish is undoubtedly the most valuable tool for fishing through various fishing gear inherited throughout history. In most cases, popular knowledge fully coincides with the scientific literature, which in turn reflects the effectiveness and proper management of fish fauna by fishermen.
