The objective of this work is to analyze the different stages that hydrocarbon exploration has had in the province of San Juan and thus understand what led the explorers of Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) to propose the Niquivil Viejo-1, the first well exploratory in the year 1947. The pioneering figures of Fossa Mancini, Tarragona, Bracaccini, among others, emerge which, based on effort and experience, were able to achieve this milestone. Over the course of almost eight decades, other Companies joined YPF, managing to drill a total of 21 wells. The majority aimed to investigate Triassic reservoirs, following the prospective model of the Cuyana Basin. Only the Pampa Vieja well x-1 investigated a trap formed by medium-lower Paleozoic deposits in the Central Precordillera. Geochemical analyzes carried out between generating levels and hydrocarbon manifestations confirm the existence of an oil system of Paleozoic age. The outcrops of bituminous rocks of Triassic age with a high percentage of total organic carbon do not have the thermal maturity necessary for generation and expulsion. Recent studies carried out by YPF have allowed us to propose the existence of a triangular zone of “thin skin” between the Central and Eastern Precordillera, which could constitute a new exploratory challenge for this frontier region. El objetivo del presente trabajo es el de analizar las distintas etapas que ha tenido la exploración de hidrocarburos en la provincia de San Juan y así entender qué llevó a los exploradores de Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) a proponer el Niquivil Viejo-1, primer pozo exploratorio en el año 1947. Surgen así las figuras pioneras de Fossa Mancini, Tarragona, Bracaccini, entre otros, que en base a esfuerzo y experiencia pudieron lograr ese hito. En el transcurso de casi ocho décadas, otras Compañías se sumaron a YPF, lográndose perforar un total de 21 pozos. La mayoría, tuvieron como objetivo investigar reservorios triásicos, siguiendo el modelo prospectivo de la Cuenca Cuyana. Sólo el pozo Pampa Vieja x-1, investigó un entrampamiento conformado por depósitos del Paleozoico medio-inferior en el ámbito de la Precordillera Central. Análisis geoquímicos realizados entre niveles generadores y manifestaciones de hidrocarburos, confirman la existencia de un sistema petrolero de edad paleozoica. Los afloramientos de rocas bituminosas de edad triásica con alto porcentaje de carbono orgánico total no cuentan con la madurez térmica necesaria para la generación y expulsión. Recientes estudios realizados por YPF han permitido proponer la existencia de una zona triangular de “piel fina” entre la Precordillera Central y Oriental, la cual podría constituir un nuevo desafío exploratorio para esta región de frontera.
