A particular emphasis is placed in the case of Mexico City’s guards, which rather than the Mexican Army, were the ones that truly lead the Battle of Churubusco fought on August 20th, 1847. This article acquires relevance if we consider that the historiography of this war tends to minimize civilian participation, while assuming the Mexican Army’s leadership as the real defense against the US expansionist ambitions. Moreover, the article attempts to give a face to the more than 700 anonymous combatants “defenders of Churubusco”, mostly civilians who carried out the historic defense of Churubusco against the whims of historiography and beyond the few names that stand out in this important Battle. Thus, on this occasion, we will try to give voice to Jose Maria Gonzales, one of the men to whom the “Monument of the Fallen”, located at the Battle site, is dedicated, although very little is known. En este artículo se intenta construir, en primer lugar, un perfil socio-político de los individuos que en el contexto de la intervención estadounidense en México (1846-1849) tendieron a conformar la Guardia Nacional, se coloca especial énfasis en el caso de las guardias de la ciudad de México, las cuáles, más que el ejército, fueron las que realmente protagonizaron la Batalla de Churubusco que fue librada el 20 de agosto de 1847. Este artículo adquiere relevancia si se considera que la historiografía de esta guerra, al día de hoy tiende a reflexionar poco sobre la participación que en ella tuvieron los civiles y, por el contrario, a asumir con bastante naturalidad que la defensa de la patria frente a las ambiciones expansionistas estadounidenses de aquellos años habría estado sólo a cargo del ejército mexicano.En segundo lugar, el artículo intenta comenzar a dar un “rostro” a los más de 700 combatientes, en su mayor parte civiles, que realizaron la histórica defensa de Churubusco, ya que, frente a los caprichos de la historiografía, más allá de unos cuántos nombres que se destacan en la narrativa histórica de esta importante Batalla, el resto de los “defensores de Churubusco” aún permanecen en el anonimato; en esta ocasión intentaremos dar voz a José María Gonzales, uno de los hombres a quiénes se encuentra dedicado el “Monumento a los caídos”, ubicado en la sede de la Batalla, pero del que contradictoriamente se sabe muy poco.
