We focus on the analysis that this thinker made of the relationship between objective necessity and subjective freedom, and its implications for the explanation of historical development. The point of departure is the discussion about the place of free will in the historical process, and we try to develop the ideas that Plekhanov employed to address this issue in terms of historical materialism. As this is an ontological and epistemological discussion derived from the subject-object relationship in the social sciences, the retrieval of the ideas of this somewhat forgotten author seeks to contribute to a still ongoing debate in the field of the theory of history. Este artículo ofrece una interpretación del pensamiento filosófico del autor marxista ruso Georgi Plejánov a través del estudio y reflexión de algunas de sus obras principales. Nos centramos en los abordajes que este pensador realizó sobre el problema de la relación entre la necesidad objetiva y la libertad subjetiva y sus implicancias para explicar el devenir histórico. El punto de partida es la discusión en torno al lugar que ocupa la libertad del sujeto, la agencia, en el proceso histórico, y se intentaran desarrollar las ideas que pone en juego Plejánov para abordar esta cuestión en los términos del materialismo histórico. Al ser esta una discusión ontológica y epistemológica que deriva de la relación sujeto–objeto en las ciencias sociales, el rescate del pensamiento de este autor, un tanto olvidado, busca aportar a un debate aún hoy vigente en el campo de la teoría de la historia.
