Firstly, they identify assumptions shared by Argentinian middle-class intellectuals during the second half of 20th century, and secondly, they depict the memorial and subjective dimensions operating in his historical enquiries. An analysis of Halperinian texts on Peronism illustrates a unique split in his melancholic view of history between, on the one hand, a transformative process that transpires irrespective of the individual’s will, and, on the other, the historical experience of intellectual elites who claim to command an alien tomorrow. For Halperin the working-class masses constitute a living “chorus” but one that does not grasp and less protagonize the events of an enigmatic reality.
