Sumario:Screening of indigenous bacteria for the presence of genetic information for the biosynthesis of storage polymers was performed in river water samples using PCR amplification combined with Southern blotting. Polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase genes and polyphosphate kinase genes were detected using template DNA from different laboratory and river isolated bacterial strains, and from total river water DNA. This approach could be a suitable alternative to the study of bacterial communities based on the analysis of genes instead of microorganisms.
