The following series were analyzed: Os 2(O2C (CH2)n - 2CH2) 2; Os2(O2C(CH2)n - 2CH2)2Cl; (and also their analogs where X = Br or I); Os2 (benzoate)2Cl; Os2 (x, y, z - BmOCn)4Cl, (where x, y, z - BmOCn are substituted benzoates, m = number of alkoxy chains on the aromatic rings in the positions x, y, z and n = number of carbon atoms in each linear alkoxy chains), and also, for comparative purposes, their divalent analogs, Os2(4-B1OCn)4Cl; Os 2(3, 4- B2OCn)4 Cl and Os2(4-B1OCn) 4Cl. In all cases the number of n were varied. The nature of the axial ligands was found to dictate the two decomposition pathways, while the equatorial carboxylates play an insignificant role. Their thermal decompositions were found to involve the reduction of the bimetallic center to Os. The pentacarboxylates (X-= CH3(CH2)n - 2CO2-) have a two-step mechanism with Os 2II,II(O2C (CH2)n - 2CH 2)2 as their intermediate products, while the halocomplexes (X-= halide) proceed in only one complex step.
