A stage-dependent susceptibility study on nickel (Ni) toxicity in Rhinella arenarum embryos identified Gastrulae stage as the most resistant and the Fin Circulation stage as the most susceptible. Larval stages were markedly more resistant than embryos. Within a dose-response relationship, the most a...

520 | 3 | |a A stage-dependent susceptibility study on nickel (Ni) toxicity in Rhinella arenarum embryos identified Gastrulae stage as the most resistant and the Fin Circulation stage as the most susceptible. Larval stages were markedly more resistant than embryos. Within a dose-response relationship, the most adverse teratogenic effects were obtained at Blastulae and Gastrulae stages, with significant effects on both morphogenesis and cellular differentiation. The stage- dependent susceptibility was found to be directly related to the bioconcentration factor of the metal. Antioxidant defenses and aerobic metabolism parameters increased with the embryonic development, while no direct relation between oxidative stress and Ni toxicity was obtained. Ni affected the oxygen consumption resulting, form Tail Bud stage onwards, in a biomarker of its toxicity, anticipating lethal effects exerted by this heavy metal. The methodology employed for the evaluation of Ni toxicity was applied in order to study eventual adaptations to environmental pollution, as well as for a comparative assessment of the susceptibilities of different anurans larvae from different sites of the low Reconquista River basin. Both, in situ and bioassays conducted in laboratory conditions, confirmed the severe deterioration in the water quality of the Aliviador Channel of Reconquista River (Buenos Aires Province), resulting in the in situ bioassays as a more relevant method for toxicity assessment purposes |l eng
