There are several studies on the immatures of some species of Heterostylum (Bohart et al. 1960; Yeates and Greathead 1997), which are considered ectoparasites of fossorial solitary bee larvae and pupae (Yeates & Greathead 1997). The New World restricted genus presently includes 14 species assigned to two species groups (Nearctic [five species] and Neotropical [nine species] clades) with a putative origin in the Caribbean Region (Lamas et al. 2014). Some species of the Neotropical clade have restricted distributions (e.g., H. duocolor (Painter & Painter) is known only from the type specimen; or H. maculipennis Cunha & Lamas is endemic to humid environments of the Atlantic Forest, Lamas et al.2014), while other species have broad distributions, such as H. ferrugineum (Fabricius) (from Virgin Islands in Caribbean Region to Paraguay, see Fig. 1) and H. rufum (Olivier) (from Mexico and Caribbean Region to Argentina). As a result of their extensive distributions, these species are present in different biogeographic regions. Moreover, one species (H.hirsutum (Thunberg)) has a disjunct distribution, with populations in northern South America (Colombia and Venezuela) and populations in southwestern Brazil and northwestern Argentina (Fig. 1). The phylogeny and biogeography of Heterostylum was analyzed by Lamas et al. (2014). In the austral region of South America, three species of Heterostylum are recorded from Argentina: H. duocolor, from a single locality in the center of the country (Córdoba); H. hirsutum, also known from a single locality on northwestern Argentina (La Rioja) and H. rufum without a more precise locality from literature records (Cunha et al. 2007; Lamas & Evenhuis 2014; Evenhuis & Greathead 2015). In this paper, we report for the first time Heterostylum ferrugineum in Argentina, representing an expansion of ca.1,000 km south of its previously known distribution, and two new Argentinian records for H. hirsutum, one of which represents the austral-most record of the genus. The material studied is deposited in the Entomological Collection of the Facultad de Agronomía (FAUBA), Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina and at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales (MACN), Buenos Aires, Argentina. The distribution map was constructed using SimpleMappr (Shorthouse 2010). Data of previous distributions of both species is from Lamas et al. (2014).
