Sumario: | A new stratigraphic scheme is proposed for the Lower Carboniferous in the Precordillera of San Juan (northwest Argentina). On the basis of the information obtained from two main outcrops the Angualasto Group is defined, to include the El Raton, Maliman and Cortaderas formations. At its type locality the Angualasto Group comprises two formations, Maliman (lower) and Cortaderas (upper) which unconformably overlie the Chigua Formation (Devonian). On the basis of palynological data the Cortaderas Formation (originally considered to be Upper Carboniferous-Permian) is assigned to the Lower Carboniferous. As a result, the known amount of early Carboniferous sedimentation is increased and the stratigraphic chart of the region is considerably modified. -from English summary |
