At its type locality the Angualasto Group comprises two formations, Maliman (lower) and Cortaderas (upper) which unconformably overlie the Chigua Formation (Devonian). On the basis of palynological data the Cortaderas Formation (originally considered to be Upper Carboniferous-Permian) is assigned to the Lower Carboniferous.
