Sumario:The aim of this article is to analyze how a group of people that began to cirujear in the mid-1990s in the city of Buenos Aires constructed the activity as a legitimate way of living. The focus of the article is put on the understanding of how some garbage scavengers constructed themselves as subjects that perform a worthy activity, on the meanings that the activity has acquired and on the practices and discourses that allowed this construction to happen. The article not only focuses on the area of need (earning the living), but at the same time, is put on the construction of legitimate and reasonable ways to do it from two different analytical levels. On the one hand a level regarding the construction of ideals (hegemonic) to be a worker. On the other hand, the ways in which subjects (re) construct their experiences, build relationships, and generate social imaginaries, explanations, justifications about their occupation and the ways they are changing.
