Imaging the sedimentary basin of the Tucumán Plain in the northern Pampean Ranges, Argentina

The Pampean Ranges (PR) of Argentina are a region of active thick-skinned deformation between stable cratonic South America and the Andes. The Tucumán Plain (TP) at the northern end of the PR lies just west of the most easterly active faults. In 1998, we collected 18 wideband magnetotelluric (MT) si...

The Tucumán Plain (TP) at the northern end of the PR lies just west of the most easterly active faults. In 1998, we collected 18 wideband magnetotelluric (MT) sites along two east-west (E-W) transects across the TP. The northern transect is along 27°10′S. The southern transect, along 27°39′S, crosses a widespread, low-temperature geothermal reservoir. Inversion of the data with electrical field polarized perpendicular to strike reveals a basin extending to a depth greater than 4 km, whose lower limit is consistent with the tectonic setting. Within the basin is a shallow low-resistive layer approximately 700 m deep, which correlates with the Pliocene Araucanense Formation. This overlies a much more conductive body representing a highly salty Miocene Formation (Calchaquense). © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
