Fibrinogen, its relationship with body weight, lipids and smoking habit in healthy subjects

Plasma fibrinogen levels (Fg) were found to be an important risk factor for coronary heart disease in men and women, with and without pre-existing coronary heart disease. Fibrinogen is also important as a risk factor for coronary death in association with other factors, the most important of which i...

Fibrinogen is also important as a risk factor for coronary death in association with other factors, the most important of which is smoking. Fg was measured in 2.059 healthy adults by the Clauss assay. Establishing the reference value of plasma fibrinogen levels and comparing it with total cholesterol (tChol), HDL cholesterol (HDL), LDL cholesterol (LDL), triglycerides (TG) and glycaemia (Gl), body weight (W), systolic arterial pressure (SAP) and diastolic arterial pressure (DAP) and smoking was set as an objective in our environment. Fibrinogen levels were higher in smokers than in no smokers. There was direct correlation with the number of cigarettes/day, W, tChol, LDL, Gl, SAP and DAP (p < 0.05) and inverse correlation with HDL (p < 0.05). No differences were found in nonsmokers compared to the general population. Fil:Ouviña, S.M. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales; Argentina. Fil:Sassetti, B.
