Palynology from the Upper Carboniferous Itararé Subgroup at Itaporanga, Paraná Basin, São Paulo State, Brazil. Part one: Spores and palaeophytoplankton systematics

Four palyniferous core levels from the IG-01 borehole at Itaporanga were analysed. This section belongs to the middle-upper part of the Itararé Subgroup. Sumario:Four palyniferous core levels from the IG-01 borehole at Itaporanga were analysed. This section belongs to the middle-upper part of the Itararé Subgroup. The systematic analysis of 33 miospore species identified comprise: Thirty trilete spores and three paleophytoplankton species including Deusilities tenuistriatus Gutiérrez et al., Botryococcus braunii Kützing and Brazilea scissa (Balme and Hennelly) Foster. A new spore species, Apiculatisporis variornatus, is described. Seven species of spores are identified for the first time in the Paraná Basin: Retusotriletes anfractus Menéndez and Azcuy, Cyclogranisporites firmus Jones and Truswell, Apiculatasporites parviapiculatus Azcuy, Dibolisporites disfacies Jones and Truswell, Convolutispora muriornata Menéndez, Cristatisporites stellatus (Azcuy) Gutiérrez and Limarino and Kraeuselisporites volkheimerii Azcuy. The diagnosis of the genus Velamisporites Bharadwaj and Venkatachala is extended and one species is newly combined: Velamisporites australiensis (Playford and Helby).
