| Sumario: | The electrification program in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the late 1970s marked the first large-scale intervention aimed at implementing a public service in these areas. It also provided residents with a greater sense of security regarding the threat of eviction. Drawing on research conducted in public agency archives, Light’s own records, contemporary press coverage, and interviews with two engineers involved in the program, this paper seeks to briefly analyze the history of energy provision in the favelas and examine the implementation of the electrification initiative. It further aims to explore the various political impacts that arose from the program. The historical analysis offers valuable insights for rethinking how public services can be managed in favelas, contributing to the development of more democratic and equitable models of regulation and governance. |
