| Sumario: | Six species of spiny rat (Echimyidae) have been documented to occur in Paraguay belonging to two subfamilies: Echimyinae (4 species in 4 genera) and Euryzgomatomyinae (2 species in 2 genera). No species have been the subject of specific field studies in Paraguay. Only one species is widespread through the country: Myocastor coypus. Two species show ecoregion associations: Clyomys laticeps (Cerrado) and Kannabateomys amblyonyx (Atlantic Forest). For several species the current national IUCN threat classification is considered to inadequately reflect threat levels. |
