| Sumario: | This article aims to analyze the approach to the topic of abortion on the historic magazine Para Tí’s website and its repercussions on the social network Instagram in December, 2020 –the month when the Law 27,610 was finally passed. The article addresses the discussion of the topic, which reached the magazine as an unavoidable issue, in order to reflect upon readers’ response practices. Even though the women’s press attempted to exclude political discourse, the debate over the IVE law was marked by discursive disputes, especially within the magazine’s social media platforms, which allowed for the expression of their readers. The methodology used combines contributions from media and gender studies along with semiotics and discourse analysis. The text explores the discussion over the renewed interlocution forms in the media production of women’s magazines. Specifically, it draws on the study of how historical political tensions around gender are intertwined with current sociotechnical transformations and stimulate the conformation of adherence, contestation, indifference, or interpellation practices. In the case of Para Tí, the magazine’s editorial decision for Instagram was to present only the voice opposing Pope Francis’s sanction. The response practices were mostly directed at questioning the authoritative voice or avoiding the topic. |
