| Sumario: | A surveillance study was conducted to characterize the mechanism involved in the resistance to the most clinically used antibiotic families, ?-lactams and quinolones, in Cochabamba-Bolivia. ?-lactamase coding genes and also plasmid mediated quinolone resistance markers (PMQR) were investigated in a total of 101 third generation cephalosporin resistant enterobacteria recovered from different health centers, during December 2012 to March 2013.\nDetected ?-lactamases absolutely belonged to CTX-M type enzymes, corresponding to CTX-M-group-1 (89), CTX-M-group-9 (10) and CTX-M-group-2 (1). One isolate displayed both CTX-M-group-1 and CTX-M-group-9 enzymes. The presence of blaoxa-1 was detected in 71% of the isolates.\nResistance to both families of antibiotics was frequently observed, being 93% of the included isolated resistant to quinolones.\nCoding gene for Aac(6?)-Ib-cr was the most frequent PMQR identified in this study (83%). Six isolates harbored qnr, corresponding to qnrB1 (5) and qnrB19 (1), and another 6 harbored the coding gene for the QepA1 efflux pump. OqxAB coding genes were only identified in one E. coli isolate.\nThis constitutes the first study of ?-lactam and quinolone resistance markers performed in Cochabamba-Bolivia. Also, it constitutes the first report of qepA1, qnrB1, qnrB19 and aac(6?)-Ib-cr in this city of Bolivia, and the first description of oqxAB in the whole country an even one of the first reports in Latin America. |
