Sumario:This short essay explores how the production context of El gaucho Martín Fierro may have influenced the work. In particular, the millenarian perspectives that circulated among the Buenos Aires population as a result of some critical situations in the years 1871 and 1872, which some thought were signs of the Apocalypse. Secondly, a reflection is made on the reasons for the great immediate success of José Hernández’s poem, proposing others besides its crucial character as a protest poem.
