Sumario:In Argentina, the national schools have been the institutions of formation of the ruling elite, of the state officials, as well as the preparatory for the entrance to the University. This has led historiography to enhance their elitist character without perceiving in their proper dimension their scope in terms of enrollment and their internal selective mechanisms. Also, its development hasn't been statistically compared to normal schools, both being the main modalities of post-primary education. This article focuses on describing the progress and limitations of these institutions, taking as its axis the enrollment, desertion, and graduation of students. Official statistics have been used as main sources, with which the picture of the situation of secondary education in the analyzed situations is reconstructed. Besides, the labor insertion of graduates is explored.
