Sumario:This article studies the policies implemented by the National Commission of Culture (CNC) in the Argentine literary field in the 1930s. It deals especially with the analysis of the debates on the gaucho genre in the internal sessions of this public entity and delves into the selection criteria used for the awarding of literary prizes in the contests promoted by this state agency. The hypothesis is that a significant set of the CNC’s actions focused on the promotion and dissemination of those literary works that represented the “gaucho criollo”, with mestizo components, as an authentic emblem of the national culture.
