Sumario:In order to achieve the “Conquest of the Desert”, certain procedures of symbolic and literary appropriation were needed, as well as building a claim of national sovereignty over the “terra incognita” that was the region of Patagonia. In a similar vein, in the face of conflict against Chile, the cultural scene aimed for the appropriation of the Patagonian territory for the Argentinian State through its literary recovery of the land. In this article, we will read Francisco P. Moreno’s Viaje a la Patagonia Austral (1879) and Roberto Payró’s La Australia Argentina (1898) comparing how each work incorporates this territory in dispute relating to the conflict in the Argentinian-Chilean border region.
