Sumario:Studies on the acculturation process of migrant communities are increasingly relevant, considering they allow to understand the experiences that result from the coexistence between individuals (or groups) and the development of intercultural societies. The aim of this work was to investigate sociocultural competencies in the adaptation of Portuguese emigrants living in Mexico. This research was cross-sectional exploratory, with a quantitative approach; 81 participants selected by convenience; evaluated using the Sociocultural Adaptation Scale (SCAS), a questionnaire with sociodemographic and migratory situational factors, and the language proficiency scale. The migratory situational factor, previous cross-cultural experiences, contributes to a better adaptation, in the areas of interpersonal communication and community involvement; supporting that the Portuguese have sociocultural competencies that facilitated their involvement with individuals from the host culture and, therefore, establish successful social relationships.
