From this point of view, democracy is seen as the fruit of the era of the masses, the spoil of pressure groups, the forerunner of egalitarianism, the prelude to totalitarianism or the vector of decadence and collectivism. Hence the need for institutional devices that contain the pernicious effects of the dogma of popular sovereignty and of a strong State that prevents politics and democracy from affecting the functioning of the market. The work analyzes a technocratic, a conservative, a pluralist and a racialized critique towards democracy and concludes by pointing out that neoliberal demophobia derives in a defense of authoritarianism. Este trabajo parte de la hipótesis de que la crisis de la democracia liberal y el auge actual de las ultraderechas neoliberales, con sus concepciones jerárquicas, machistas, xenófobas y racistas, no son solo “efectos” accidentales de los procesos de neoliberalización, sino que también encuentran antecedentes ideológicos en el colectivo de pensamiento neoliberal. Desde dicha óptica, la democracia es vista como el fruto de la era de masas, el botín de los grupos de presión, el precursor del igualitarismo, la antesala del totalitarismo, o el vector de la decadencia y del colectivismo De allí la necesidad de dispositivos institucionales que contengan los efectos perniciosos del dogma de la soberanía popular y, en particular, de un Estado fuerte que impida que la política y la democracia afecten el funcionamiento del mercado. El trabajo analiza una crítica tecnocrática, otra conservadora, otra pluralista, y otra racializada a la democracia, y concluye marcando que la demofobia neoliberal deriva en una defensa del autoritarismo.
