description In the 1970s, a new philosophical movement started to grow in Latin America: The Philosophy of Liberation. Its goal was to denounce the imperialist domination and to conquer the liberation of the people from the South. Reflected on multiple debates, articles, papers, books, etc., one of its main problems was to think about the role of philosophy in the process of liberation.  This article revises the diverse conceptions about the role of philosophy that were discussed between the philosophers of liberation at the time. On the first place, we will elaborate a philosophical map that will allow us to show the important role of philosophy in the appearance of the Philosophy of Liberation; on the second place, we will show the tensions behind the different positions to exhibit the heterogeneity of the movement from its beginnings; and, finally, we will demonstrate how the notion worked to define philosophical and political programs on Latin America.
