Henrik Vanger takes advantage of the situation and proposes a deal: to write a book about his empire and his extensive family while, at the same time, investigating the mysterious disappearance of Harriet—Vanger's niece—in 1966. Henrik is the former director of the Vanger Corporation, one of the most important companies in Sweden. During his retreat in the small town of Hedestad, Blomkvist will meet several members of the family and encounter their family intrigues for the control of the company in order to hide the family's Nazi past, and how all of this relates to Harriet's disappearance and her alleged murder. En 1996, Mikael Blomkvist es sentenciado por difamar al empresario Hans-Erik Wennerström. Henrik Vanger aprovecha la situación y le propone un trato: escribir un libro sobre su imperio y su extensa familia y, a la vez, investigar la misteriosa desaparición de Harriet —la sobrina de Vanger— en 1966. Henrik es el exdirector de la Corporación Vanger, una de las empresas más importantes de Suecia. Durante su retiro en el pequeño pueblo de Hedestad, Blomkvist conocerá a varios miembros de la familia y a sus intrigas familiares por el control de la empresa en pos de ocultar el pasado nazi de la familia y cómo todo esto se relaciona con la desaparición de Harriet y su supuesto asesinato.
